Description

Native to Mexico, the Washingtonia palm is a fast-growing tree with a tall, columnar trunk that is reddish-brown at first, turning gray with age. It is crowned with attractive, bright green, fan-shaped leaves, 1 meter or more in length, borne on long, toothed petioles. The older, lower leaves, once withered, form a covering that envelops the trunk. In summer, it typically produces panicles of creamy-white flowers, followed by black fruit. It is not particular about soil type, but prefers alkaline soils. It tolerates drought and withstands coastal marine environments.
