Description

The African acacia, also known as the thorny acacia or African pine, is a species of acacia native to southern Africa, unlike almost all other acacia species, which are native to Australia. Acacias are also (inaccurately) known as mimosas. They are fast-growing shrubs or small trees that prefer neutral to acidic soil. They have evergreen, light, and elegant leaves that are green or glaucous in color. Their flowers are masses of tiny, golden-yellow pom-poms that brighten the winters and springs of mild climates, exuding a strong honey fragrance. They tolerate coastal climates but should be sheltered from strong winds. They are very easy to grow in pots.

The thorny acacia is an ideal species for creating "defensive walls" because it can form a very dense hedge if properly pruned. Thanks to its long, sharp thorns, once the tangle of branches is established, it becomes almost impenetrable to animals and people.

Physiological and cultivation characteristics:

  • It can reach 3 to 9 meters in height and 3 to 6 meters in width.
  • It belongs to rusticity zone 10.
  • It is fast-growing.
  • It must be in an area exposed to full sun.
  • It has fragrant flowers.
  • Resistant to acidic soils.
  • It attracts birds.
  • Suitable for small gardens.
  • It can be grown in pots, planters and flower boxes to decorate terraces, balconies, etc.
  • It can be planted individually.
  • Suitable for the formation of hedges and defensive walls.
  • It withstands the sea.
