Description

The Dragon Tree, or Canary Island Dragon Tree, is a tree native to the Canary Islands. The thousand-year-old Dragon Tree of Icod de los Vinos in Tenerife is particularly famous. It is an evergreen species, initially shrubby, but with age it becomes a widely branched tree, resembling an umbrella turned upwards by the wind. Its leaves are 30-60 cm long, straight-lanceolate, spiny at the tips, and bright green. In summer, the mature plant produces long terminal panicles of greenish flowers, followed by round, reddish-orange fruits.

  • It can reach a height of 3 to 10 meters and a width of 2 to 8 meters.
  • It belongs to rusticity zone 9.
  • It is slow-growing.
  • It must be in an area exposed to full sun.
