The peach tree was already being cultivated 4,000 years ago in China; it crossed Persia and later reached the countries of the Mediterranean basin, and the Romans spread it even beyond the Alps. It thrives best in plains and hills with a mild climate, sheltered from prevailing winds and not subject to sudden temperature fluctuations in spring, which could harm its flowering. In fact, the peach tree is among the first species to awaken from its winter dormancy, and by late March or early April, it opens its flower buds, producing that beautiful bloom (a more or less pale pink in European varieties and brick red in American ones), which makes it an admirable plant, also from an ornamental point of view. Regarding soil type, the peach tree has a wide range of adaptability: it prefers medium-compacted and loose soils, but also grows in clay soils and tolerates the presence of some limestone. Its most dangerous enemy is stagnant water.
